Differences in the Properties of the Radial Artery betweenCun,Guan,Chi, and Nearby Segments Using Ultrasonographic Imaging: A Pilot Study on Arterial Depth, Diameter, and Blood Flow

Abstract: Aim of the Study. The three conventional pulse-diagnostic palpation locations (PLs) on both wrists are Cun, Guan, and Chi, and each location reveals different clinical information. To identify anatomical or hemodynamic specificity, we used ultrasonographic imaging to determine the arterial diameter, radial artery depth, and arterial blood flow velocity at the three PLs and at nearby non-PL segments. Methods. We applied an ultrasound scanner to 44 subjects and studied the changes in the arterial diameter and de… Show more

“…A drawing of the vessel with associated dimensions is shown in Figure 3A. The radial artery has been reported to have 2.5mm inner diameter and 0.2 wall thickness [38][39][40] . Vessel wall mass density and Poisson's ratio were set to 1160 kg/m 3 and 0.49 36,38,41 respectively.…”

“…Below the dermis, a subcutaneous adipose tissue layer was added. Within this layer, the radial artery is modeled as a cylinder situated at 2.5mm depth from the top surface 39,40 . The target radial artery is constructed with a vessel wall and the internal lumen is filled with blood.…”

“…These techniques evaluate the blood pressure of an individual at one instant in time and can be intrusive 10 . Cuff-based blood pressure measurement are known to have variations and inaccuracies when applied to larger arm sizes as in in individuals with obesity, as the subcutaneous adipose tissue layer increases in thickness [11][12][13] . The development of medical devices that account for physiological changes due to obesity is becoming more prevalent.…”
