Differences in the regeneration traits of Potamogeton crispus turions from macrophyte- and phytoplankton-dominated lakes

Abstract: Potamogeton crispus is widely used in submerged macrophyte restoration in China. Turions are an important means of reproduction in this species. To compare the regeneration abilities of P. crispus turions in macrophyte- and phytoplankton-dominated lakes, we collected P. crispus turions from a macrophyte-dominated lake (Liangzi Lake) and a phytoplankton-dominated lake (Taihu Lake). Both lakes are important lakes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China. Our field survey revealed that the tu… Show more

“…The higher prevalence of organic compounds in Arcadia Lake compared to the other water bodies investigated is likely due to the lack of natural cycling in lake water 57 compared to the river, ocean, and bay water and the limited options for content regeneration in that lake. 58 Notably, samples from Arcadia Lake also contained GC–MS peaks that corresponded to phthalates, commonly found in plastics 59 and other commercial products, 60 and benzophenone, 61 commonly used in personal care products such as sunscreen 62 and lip balm. 63 …”

“…Liangzi Lake, Hubei Province, China (30°05′ ∼ 30°18′N, 114°21′ ∼ 114°39′E) is a typical Macrophyte-dominated mesotrophic shallow lake [average annual diaphaneity is 1.2 m, average annual pH is 8.0, average annual salinity is 0.07 ppt, average annual total suspended solids is 19.0 mg/L, average annual total nitrogen is 0.53 mg/L, average annual total phosphorus is 0.023 mg/L and average annual chemical oxygen demand (COD) is 3.68 mg/L] in the central of Yangtze River Basin with good water quality and high biodiversity (Xie et al, 2015). It has a surface area of 304.3 km 2 and the mean depth varies from 2.5 to 6 m (Fan et al, 2015).…”

“…, which has a water surface area of 362.5 km 2 , a catchment area of 3260 km 2 , a mean water depth of 3.0 m, and a water volume of 12.65 × 10 8 m 3 , is the largest shallow lake in Hubei Province, historically, China. Lake Liangzi is a macrophyte-dominated lake in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River but the macrophytes have degraded in the past few decades [23,24]. The mean water level of Lake Liangzi is 18.01 m. From 2007 to 2016, two major floods occurred in Lake Liangzi in 2010 and 2016.…”
