Differences in the spatial landscape of urban mobility: Gender and socioeconomic perspectives

Abstract: Many of our routines and activities are linked to our ability to move; be it commuting to work, shopping for groceries, or meeting friends. Yet, factors that limit the individuals’ ability to fully realise their mobility needs will ultimately affect the opportunities they can have access to (e.g. cultural activities, professional interactions). One important aspect frequently overlooked in human mobility studies is how gender-centred issues can amplify other sources of mobility disadvantages (e.g. socioeconomi… Show more

“…The feature exploration also points to the fine distinction between the concept of an “international traveler” (associated positively with SES in Atlanta) and those living “away from hometown” (negatively associated with SES in Casablanca). Mobility, including that for economic purposes, has been shown to be an important indicator around SES (Lenormand et al, 2015 ; Millanida Hilman et al, 2021 ; Moro et al, 2021 ; Macedo et al, 2022 ).…”

“…Thus, the pattern of population mobility from the direction of new urban areas to activity centers which tends to increase over time has an impact on the complexity of the Mamminasata Metropolitan urban transportation system. The pattern of population mobility is closely related to work, shopping, and social relations based on distance and spatial distribution (Alhazzani et al, 2021;Macedo et al, 2022). The facts found in the field indicate that the pattern of origin and destination of people's journeys has an impact on traffic congestion and an increase in the burden of air pollution originating from motor vehicle exhaust gases.…”

“…In addition, differences in the mode of transport between men and women have been demonstrated, with women using more sustainable modes of transport, which may be relevant for mobility planning in cities [20]. Lastly, concerning socioeconomic status, the pattern is not consistent in all national contexts, but a trend can be identified: wealthier individuals tend to have more selective patterns, while poorer ones are constrained by their limited resources [21]. In Spain, this translates into expanded mobility for middle-class sectors, which tend to have more fragmented living spaces due to their greater ability to choose and move between them, especially using the private car [13], in contrast to the members of the working class, who confine their everyday lives to the surrounding environment: the neighbourhood [22].…”
