Writing has held a long‐standing position in language testing, initially to assess grammar and translation, but evolving into a useful measure of communicative competence. Researchers have explored various approaches to analyze writing in assessment to answer questions about validity, reliability, and language proficiency. This chapter details text‐based measures of written discourse that break language into complexity, accuracy, and fluency as well as organization, coherence, cohesion, and development, with example studies for illustration. These measures provide closer inspection of written language by focusing on components of the construct of writing.
