Global change and local stressors are simultaneously affecting the nearshore corals, and microbiome flexibility may assist corals in thriving under such multiple stressors. Here, we investigated the effects of various environmental variables on Galaxea fascicularis holobiont from nearshore and offshore reefs. These nearshore reefs were more turbid, eutrophic, and warm than offshore reefs. However, coral physiological parameters did not differ significantly. Corals under stressful nearshore environments had low symbiont diversity and selected more tolerant Symbiodiniaceae. The bacterial diversity of offshore corals was significantly higher, and their community composition varied obviously. Diffusion limitations and environmental heterogeneity were essential in structuring microbial communities. Functional annotation analysis demonstrated significant differences between nearshore and offshore corals in bacterial functional groups. Environmental stress significantly reduced the complexity and connectivity of bacterial networks, and the abundances of keystone taxa altered considerably. These results indicated that corals could thrive nearshore through holobiont plasticity to cope with multiple environmental stresses.

Organomineral fertilizer application enhances Perilla frutescens nutritional quality and rhizosphere microbial community stability in karst mountain soils

IntroductionApplications of organomineral fertilizer (OMF) are important measures for developing organic agriculture in karst mountain areas. However, the influence of OMF on the structure and function of soil microbial diversity and their relationship with crop yield and quality are still unclear.MethodsBased on soil science, crop science, and high-throughput sequencing methods, we investigated the changes of rhizosphere soil microbial communities of Perilla frutescens under different fertilization measures. Then, the relationship between P. frutescens yield and quality with soil quality was analyzed.ResultsThe results showed that the addition of OMF increased the amount of total carbon and total potassium in soil. OF, especially OMF, improved P. frutescens yield and quality (e.g., panicle number per plant, main panicle length, and unsaturated fatty acid contents). Both OF and OMF treatments significantly increased the enrichment of beneficial microorganism (e.g., Bacillus, Actinomadura, Candidatus_Solibacter, Iamia, Pseudallescheria, and Cladorrhinum). The symbiotic network analysis demonstrated that OMF strengthened the connection among the soil microbial communities, and the community composition became more stable. Redundancy analysis and structural equation modeling showed that the soil pH, available phosphorus, and available potassium were significantly correlated with soil microbial community diversity and P. frutescens yield and quality.DiscussionOur study confirmed that OMF could replace CF or common OF to improve soil fertility, crop yield and quality in karst mountain soils.

Mass coral bleaching is a severe threat to coral reefs in the era of global warming, and upwelling areas may serve as thermal refugia for coral reefs by mitigating the effects of heating anomalies. This study seeks to examine the impact of the Qiongdong upwelling (QDU) on the coastal coral reefs of the Hainan Island. The environmental variables (i.e., physiochemical parameters, coastal land use) differed significantly in upwelling and non-upwelling areas. In particular, the presence of colder and more saline water was the important indicator of coastal upwelling. In the QDU, turf algae and macroalgae dominated the algae communities, but habitat-specific environment and coastal development contributed to lower calcified algae, coral larvae replenishment and live corals cover. Lower abundance of coral reefs fishes could be attributed to the disappearance of live corals, increase of algae coverage, low habitat complexity and strong wave exposure at upwelling stations. Upwelling-related environmental parameters, wave exposure, land use and potential local stressors were revealed as major driving factors related to significant spatial changes in stony coral and fish communities. Overall, the present findings suggest that the Qiongdong upwelling has the potential to provide thermal refuge for coral reefs, but is severely affected by local anthropogenic activities.
