Differential Allocation of Seed-Borne Ergot Alkaloids During Early Ontogeny of Morning Glories (Convolvulaceae)

Abstract: Ergot alkaloids are mycotoxins that can increase host plant resistance to above- and below-ground herbivores. Some morning glories (Convolvulaceae) are infected by clavicipitaceous fungi (Periglandula spp.) that produce high concentrations of ergot alkaloids in seeds-up to 1000-fold greater than endophyte-infected grasses. Here, we evaluated the diversity and distribution of alkaloids in seeds and seedlings and variation in alkaloid distribution among species. We treated half the plants with fungicide to diffe… Show more

“…In the case of vertebrates, it has been determined that some toxic alkaloids, such as ergot alkaloids, behave like neurotransmitters (i.e., dopamine, serotonin, and adrenaline) causing vasoconstriction, smooth muscle contraction, bewilderment, and hallucinations (Beaulieu et al, 2013). In addition, penitrem, paxilline, and lolitrem B are also known to be tremorgenic and have been associated with diseases of domestic animals and mice (Gallagher et al, 1981; Smith et al, 1997).…”

“…Determination of ergot alkaloid content in seeds and foliage.-Ergot alkaloids were identified and quantified by methods described by Panaccione et al (2012), Beaulieu et al (2013). One to three seeds per accession (18-195 mg) were ground into a coarse powder with a Wiley mill (General Electric Corp.), extracted with methanol and analyzed with HPLC and LC/MS.…”
