Elastic scattering and transfer cross sections for the 7 Be + 9 Be system have been measured at E lab = 23.1 MeV using the 7 Be radioactive secondary beam produced at Radioactive Ion Beams in Brazil facility at the University of São Paulo. The elastic scattering has been measured by detecting the 7 Be scattered at forward angles in the laboratory system. The transfer reaction 9 Be( 7 Be, 9 Be) 7 Be was identified by detecting the 9 Be scattered at the same laboratory angles. The elastic angular distribution has been analyzed by optical model calculations using a Woods-Saxon form factor whose parameters have been varied to best reproduce the experimental data at forward angles. Coupled reaction channels calculations (CRC) have been performed to describe the transfer, considering the coupling to the transfer channel and including contributions to the ground state and to the first excited state of 7 Be(1/2−; 429 keV) in the final state. The spectroscopic amplitudes used in the CRC calculation have been derived from shell-model calculations. Similar CRC calculations were applied to existing 9 Be(p, t ) 7 Be data to check the consistency of our results results for the ( 7 Be, 9 Be) transfer reaction.

An alternative method for the detection of beryllium in light element matrices is proposed, implementing the use of a deuteron beam at energies from 1 to 2.1 MeV and the $^{9}$Be(d,n$\gamma )^{10}$B reaction. A HP GE detector of 20{\%} relative efficiency was used to detect the 718 keV gamma ray of $^{10}$B. The minimum detection limits obtained for beryllium, are compared to those taken with other NRA techniques (PIGE, heavy-ion and charged-particle spectroscopy) in complex matrices containing high concentrations of light elements. The absolute $\gamma $-ray yield of the reaction is also compared to absolute $\gamma $-ray yields from literature.

Nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) is one among the numerous analytical techniques involving the irradiation of a material with energetic particles. In NRA methods we exclude any remnant radioactivity together with interactions leading to the scattering of the incident particle only: this last procedure leads to RBS (Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy) and ERD (elastic recoil detection). In NRA the nature of the emitted particle used as an analytical signal is obviously different from that of the incident one. In order to avoid permanent radioactivity, the energy of the projectile is maintained at a sufficiently low value (below 6 MeV, easily available using a small accelerator). Consequently, due to the large coulomb barrier around heavy nuclei, only light nuclei may be easily identified (atomic mass less than or equal to 30). After discussing the kinematics and fundamentals of the interactions, we present examples of applications in material sciences, archaeological and biological materials.
