“…Recent hypotheses regarding the etiology of ADHD emphasize deficits in self-regulation and the ability to inhibit maladaptive responses potentially associated with frontal lobe dysfunction (Barkley Grodzinsky, & DuPaul, 1992; Barkley, 1997a). In addition to these nonsensory deficits, children with ADHD may perform more poorly than age-matched controls on a variety of tasks assessing central auditory function (Chermak, Hall, & Musiek, 1999; Chermak, Somers, & Seikel, 1998; Gascon, Johnson, & Burd, 1986; Lucker, Geffner, & Koch, 1996). Whereas some researchers suggest that nonsensory behavioral deficits associated with ADHD can account for deficient performance on tasks dependent on central auditory function (Cook et al, 1993; Gascon et al, 1986), others hypothesize the presence of a separate central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) that may, in some children, be comorbid with ADHD (Chermak et al, 1999; Riccio, Hynd, Cohen, Hall, & Molt, 1994).…”
