Differential Effects of In Vitro Treatment with Cinobufotalin on Three Types of Ovarian Cancer Cells

Abstract: Background/Aim: Cinobufotalin (CINO), a cardiotonic steroid, has been used as an anticancer agent. This study assessed the cell-specific effect of CINO on SK- OV-3, CRL-1978 and CRL-11731 ovarian cancer cells which differ in terms of their respective karyotypes. Materials and Methods: Cell cultures were treated with CINO (0.1, 1, 5 and 10 μM) for 24, 48, and 72 h. Cell proliferation, migration, and invasion were measured using CellTiter, Cytoselect, and FluoroBlock assays, respectively. Expression of prolifer… Show more

“…Due to its oncogenic function in colon cancer, the USP36/c-Myc axis may be a potential target for developing the anticancer drug. CBF, a cardiotonic steroid extracted from dried toad venom, exerts antitumor activity and has the ability to enhance the chemotherapeutic effect in several cancers [ 38 , 39 ]. However, whether CBF plays an anti-cancer function in colon cancer remains unknown.…”

“…Cinobufotalin was previously found to inhibit the activity of Na + /K + -ATP enzyme ( Akimova et al, 2005 ). In addition, cinobufotalin has inhibitory effects on many tumors, including lung, liver, ovarian, breast, and gastric cancers ( Kai et al, 2014 ; Cheng et al, 2015 ; Afroze et al, 2018 ; Li J. et al, 2019 ; Sun et al, 2019 ). More importantly, cinobufotalin also alters the sensitivity of chemotherapeutic drugs ( Li Y. et al, 2019 ; Liu et al, 2022 ).…”
