Analyzing the spatial distribution of meteorological factors and air pollutants and its correlation is of great importance for urban air pollution prevention. This study explored the spatial distribution of meteorological factors and air pollutants, analyzed the correlation between meteorological factors and air pollutants, and revealed the main meteorological factors that influence the air pollutants in 31 provincial capitals of China during 2010-2020. The results show that the spatial distribution characteristics of air pollutants and the days of air quality equal to or above grade II in 31 provincial capitals of China during 2010-2020 vary obviously. The days of air quality equal to or above grade II are negatively correlated with the annual average concentration of NO 2 and annual average concentration of PM 10 during 2010-2020 , and annual average concentration of SO 2 during 2010 to 2018. The temperature, precipitation, and relative humidity are the main meteorological factors affecting the air quality in different seasons in 31 provincial capitals of China during 2010-2020. The findings will provide a scientific basis for atmospheric environment control and urban air quality forecast.

The impact of urbanization on the environmental quality of ecologically fragile areas has long been ambiguous. With a focus on the human–environment interaction in 95 counties of Hengduan Mountain, an ecologically fragile region in southwestern China, in this study, we clarify the impact and mechanism of urbanization on environmental quality through the environmental regulation effect, using econometric models and county-level panel data from 2010 to 2019. The results of this study show that: (1) urbanization and environmental regulation have increased over this 10-year period within the study area and regional differences in environmental quality have decreased; (2) urbanization significantly contributes to environmental quality, with heterogenous effects on different environmental elements—increasing the proportion of wetlands and green areas per capita but suppressing vegetation coverage and production efficiency; and (3) environmental regulation is an important mechanism for urbanization to improve environmental quality; however, there are negative externalities on neighboring areas. The results of this study show that urbanization and environmental quality are not always mutually exclusive, thus providing a reference for the development of pro-environmental urbanization to improve sustainable development in ecologically fragile areas.

The impact of public environmental concern on environmental pollution: The moderating effect of government environmental regulation

As environmental problems continue to intensify, public environmental awareness and participation have become key forces in a modernized environmental governance system. Recognizing the importance of public participation in environmental governance, this study explores the influence of public pressure on environmental pollution and its implications for China’s long-term environmental management efforts. Using statistical and internet search data from 284 prefecture-level cities between 2011 and 2020, the study finds that a 1% increase in public environmental concern leads to a 0.009% reduction in pollution. The study also highlights the strengthening effect of government environmental regulation on the impact of public environmental concern. Moreover, regional heterogeneity analysis reveals a stronger effect of public environmental concern in cities facing low economic pressure. The findings of the study provide a reference for the construction of a coordinated and sustainable environmental governance model in China as well as in developing countries.
