Differential expression of five prosomatostatin genes in the central nervous system of the catsharkScyliorhinus canicula

Abstract: Five prosomatostatin genes (PSST1, PSST2, PSST3, PSST5 and PSST6) have been recently identified in elasmobranchs (Tostivint, Gaillard, Mazan, & Pézeron, 2019). In order to gain insight into the contribution of each somatostatin to specific nervous systems circuits and behaviors in this important jawed vertebrate group, we studied the distribution of neurons expressing PSST mRNAs in the catshark Scyliorhinus canicula using in situ hybridization with specific probes for the five PSSTs transcripts. Additionally… Show more

“…The dorsal and lateral pallia of adult catsharks also contain SOM-ir cells (not shown) in agreement with results in other shark species [Chiba et al, 1989]. Numerous scattered somatostatinergic cells (expressing prosomatostatin genes), many of them exhibiting TH immunoreactivity too, have been recently reported in the pallium of the catshark juveniles [Sobrido-Cameán et al, 2020], but presomatostatin-expressing cells are nearly absent in their lateroventral walls (see Fig. 1d, e of Sobrido-Cameán et al [2020]).…”

SOM-ir and TH-ir cells in the lateral wall present the characteristic small size of the catecholaminergic and somatostatinergic cells of the pallial adjacent region, abundantly occupying also the lateral (ventral) pallium [Carrera et al, 2012;Sobrido-Cameán et al, 2020].…”

“…In some samples, ISH for PmCRHBP was followed by immunohistochemistry against PmCRH. These experiments were performed as described in a previous study (Sobrido‐Cameán, Tostivint, et al., 2020). Briefly, after the ISH signal was clearly visible, sections were rinsed twice in TBS and treated with 10% H 2 O 2 in TBS for 30 min.…”
