Differential Expression of HIF1A, EPAS1, and VEGF Genes in Benign and Malignant Ovarian Neoplasia

Abstract: Ovarian cancer (OC) has the highest mortality rate of all gynecological malignancies. Moreover, at the time of the first clinical manifestation, most patients have an advanced stage of the disease. Our study examined differences in mRNA levels of hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF1A); endothelial PAS domain protein 1, also known as hypoxia-inducible factor 2-alpha (HIF2A/EPAS1); and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) between cancerous tissue, benign hyperplastic changes in the ovary, and normal ti… Show more

“…These values were then compared with the appropriate threshold values and reference gene assays using LC 5.0.0.38 software. All results were presented as concentration ratios (Cr—fluorescence measurement results normalized to standard curves and compared to the HPRT reference gene), corresponding to the relative expression level [ 65 ]. Mean values were then evaluated with the use of relevant statistical analyses.…”

“…EPAS1 encodes the endothelial PAS domain protein 1, also known as hypoxia-inducible factor 2A (HIF2A), which is a transcription factor that regulates genes associated with angiogenesis [ 39 ]. HIF2A induces the expression of OCT4, a BCSC marker [ 40 ].…”

“…There are highly hypoxic regions in glioma. As a major regulator of cellular response to hypoxia, HIF1A can also stimulate the up-regulation of VEGF expression and plays a key role in promoting malignant biological behavior of tumors (34,35). Several studies have underscored CASP3's pivotal role in cell apoptosis, with its activation known to trigger glioma cell apoptosis (36, 37).…”
