Differential expression of microRNAs miR‐21, miR‐31, miR‐203, miR‐125a‐5p and miR‐125b and proteins PTEN and p63 in verrucous carcinoma of the head and neck

Abstract: Differences between VC, SCC and normal epithelium in expression profiles of investigated molecules indicate their association with the pathogenesis and clinicopathological characteristics of VC. Our results suggest that some microRNAs and proteins, particularly miR-125b, miR-203 and p63, might be useful in the diagnosis of VC.

“…49 Up-regulation of miR-31 was observed in colorectal 50 and head-and-neck tumors. 51 Although the detail mechanism underlying miR-31 dysregulation in tumorigenesis remains to be investigated, studying miR-31 expression in serum could be a potential approach for diagnosis of esophageal SCC. 52 …”

“…Concurrent with our examinations, an upregulation of miR-31 in cSCCs was reported (Table 1) (9). Like miR-21, miR-31 is a proto-oncogene (15), but its effect seems to be versatile in several cancers and cancer stages (16)(17)(18)(19)(20). In cSCC, the function of miR-31 has yet to be clarified.…”

“…miR-125a-5p has been shown to be overexpressed in many cancers [12][13][14]. In addition, miR-125-5p is also reported to trigger proliferation, invasion, and migration in tumor cells [15][16][17].…”
