Plants are frequently confronted with heavy metal stress, which is one of the major environmental concerns in agriculture. Cadmium is a potent toxic and hazardous soil contaminant that is introduced into the atmosphere by industrial pollution. It can impose detrimental effects on plant growth, crop productivity and quality. To evaluate Cd-induced physio-biochemical stress response, a comparative study was conducted with three rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars (‘Maharaj’, ‘Pratiksha’ and ‘Khitish’) treated with 10 µM CdCl2. Cytotoxicity assessments were performed to determine cell death rates. The study confirmed that cv. ‘Maharaj’ was the most Cd stress tolerant due to high proline, phytochelatin, and antioxidant concentration, resulting in lower cell death rate. Cv. ‘Pratiksha’ was moderately tolerant while cv. ‘Khitish’ was more susceptible to Cd stress, showing drastic reduction in cysteine and sugar concentration, and Hill activity, with noticeable increase of lipid peroxidation, methylglyoxal and starch concentration.

The aggregation of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) particles and their limited transport ability in environmental media hinder their application in environmental remediation. In this study, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency, transport performance, and toxicity of nZVI and bentonite-modified nZVI (B-nZVI) were investigated. Compared with nZVI, B-nZVI improved the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by 10%, and also significantly increased the transport in quartz sand and soil. Increasing the flow rate can enhance the transport of nZVI and B-nZVI in the quartz sand columns. The transport of the two materials in different soils was negatively correlated with the clay composition. Besides, modification of nZVI by bentonite could reduce toxicity to luminous bacteria (Photobacterium phosphereum T3) and ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Compared with Fe-EDTA, the transfer factors of nZVI and B-nZVI were 65.0% and 66.4% lower, respectively. This indicated that although iron nanoparticles accumulated in the roots of ryegrass, they were difficult to be transported to the shoots. The results of this study indicate that B-nZVI has a strong application potential in in situ environmental remediation.

Application of nanoparticles to address various environmental issues; especially heavy metal contaminated soil restoration is of global interest. Indiscriminate usage of phosphate fertilizer and other anthropogenic activities contribute to Cd contamination of soil, resulting in degradation of soil quality and low crop yield. By the virtue of unique physiochemical characteristics, nanoparticles (NPs) are effective enough for heavy metal stress mitigation. This review has focused on Cd uptake, accumulation and toxicity in plants followed by the successful application of different metallic and non metallic NPs for soil Cd decontamination. Positive impact of NPs as plant growth elicitor under Cd stress has been explored here. Various ways of NP application (soil, foliar, hydroponics), uptake, mode of action and effective treatment concentration have been highlighted. We have collected handful information regarding the use of NPs as nanofertilizer and nanopesticides. The negative effects of NPs have not been considered here. More in depth study to be conducted for better illumination on plant - NPs interaction, mobilization mechanism and biological activities. Though this review summarizes few facts among various aspect of NP but can be counted as a supportive documentation for the better use of NPs in environmental protection in future.
