Differential liver histopathological responses to amphibian chytrid infection

Abstract: Amphibians have been facing a pandemic caused by the deadly fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). Although studies have elucidated cutaneous and homeostatic disturbances, it is still unknown if the hepatic function can be affected or if hepatic effects differ among host species. Thus, we evaluated the effects of an experimental Bd infection on the liver (histopathology and the hepatosomatic index) of 2 anuran species (Xenopus laevis and Physalaemus albonotatus) with different susceptibilities to Bd infec… Show more

“…By late‐stage infection, Bd‐GPL + frogs mounted extensive hepatic expression responses. These results agree with previous histopathological findings in Bd‐susceptible species, wherein infection led to leukocyte infiltration and hepatic atrophy (Salla et al, 2020). Most notably, whereas upregulated cytokine responses were similar to those observed at mid‐stage Bd‐Brazil infection, late‐stage responses to Bd‐GPL involved marked downregulation in a number of adaptive immune response genes.…”

“…To finalize the preparation of the frameworks, they were embedded in glycolmetacrylate resin (Historesin Leica), according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Histological sections with a thickness of 3 μm were made with a Leica microtome (RM 2245) (Salla et al., 2020). For each organ, we made serial microtome sections and stained 20 slides (4–5 cuts per slide) with hematoxylin (40 min) and eosin (5 min) (H&E; Merck), which is the staining technique for histological examination of animal tissues (Salla et al., 2020).…”
