Differential mastery criteria impact sight word acquisition and maintenance: Application to individual operants and teaching trial doses

Abstract: We compared the effects of different "mastery" criteria and doses on the acquisition and maintenance of sight words for 4 second graders with and without disabilities. First, we replicated Set Analysis and Operant Analysis conditions where participants were taught sight words in 20-trial (4 operants, 5 opportunities) sessions. Acquisition criteria were applied to a set of 4 operants or to individual operants, respectively. Second, we extended the literature by evaluating a lower dose of the Operant Analysis co… Show more

“…Fourth, half of the studies did not set a mastery criterion. However, it is crucial for researchers to identify the mastery criteria as an important indicator for assessing the effectiveness of interventions and ensuring the maintenance of the acquired skill (Aydin & Tanious, 2022;Kim et al, 2023;McDougale et al, 2020;Richling et al, 2019;. Evaluating the effectiveness of interventions based on mastery criteria necessitates considering the stages of learning and behavioral fluency (Binder, 1996;Further et al, 2003, Jimenez et al, 2021.…”
