Differential prevalence of quality-of-life categories (domains) in Asian women and changes after therapy with three doses of conjugated estrogens/medroxyprogesterone acetate: the Pan-Asia Menopause (PAM) study

Abstract: The prevalence of four domains of menopausal symptoms, representative of quality of life as recorded on a MENQOL questionnaire, varies considerably among ethnic groups of Asian women. The MENQOL scores in the overall population were significantly lowered in the course of the study, indicating an improvement in quality of life. In the absence of a placebo group, the relative contribution of hormones and placebo in our intervention is unknown.

“…Based on the known differences of menopausal symptomatology among different groups of Asian women, as well as differences in culture, lifestyle, attitude toward menopause and multiple other factors [8][9][10]31 , it has been cautioned that conclusions from data of studies in Western postmenopausal women may be of limited value when applied to Asian women 32 . This argument may apply to postmenopausal women of different Asian ethnicities as well.…”

Beneficial responses that were comparable at the three dose levels included relief of vasomotor symptoms and vaginal atrophy and alleviation of a number of other menopause-related symptoms 6 , as well as improvement in quality of life 7 .…”
