Differential Regulation of Kiss1 Expression by Melatonin and Gonadal Hormones in Male and Female Syrian Hamsters

Abstract: In seasonal breeders, reproduction is synchronized to seasons by day length via the pineal hormone melatonin. Recently, we have demonstrated that Kiss1, a key activator of the reproductive function, is down-regulated in sexually inactive hamsters maintained in inhibitory short days (SDs). In rodents, Kiss1 is expressed in the anteroventral periventricular nucleus (AVPV) and in the arcuate nucleus (ARC). Because both the duration of the nocturnal peak of melatonin and circulating sex steroid levels vary with ph… Show more

“…Indeed, so far only a frequency of two daily peripheral bolus of Kp10 over 60 h caused ovulation in seasonally acyclic ewes , underlining the importance of the frequency of administration. Thirdly, Syrian and Siberian hamsters display different photoperiodic responses (Bartness et al 1993) and Kiss1 mRNA regulation by photoperiod is opposite in the arcuate nucleus of the two species (Greives et al 2007, Ansel et al 2010). These observations suggest there exist important differences regarding the effect and physiological roles of Kp in mediating photoperiodic control of the reproductive axis between Siberian and Syrian hamsters.…”

“…The reason for this difference could be a matter of peptide sequence. Because Syrian hamsters display marked photoperiodic variations in both Kiss1 and Kp expression with lower levels in SD (Revel et al 2006a, Ansel et al 2010, we investigated whether gonadotrophs responsiveness to Kp or GNRH depends on photoperiod. An acute injection of Kp54 increased FOS immunoreactivity in the pituitary of SD than of LD-adapted animals.…”

“…For example, SD conditions suppress the expression of KiSS-1 in the AVPV in Syrian hamsters (Revel et al, 2006a;Ansel et al, 2010) but increase expression in the Arc of Siberian hamsters Simonneaux et al, 2009). SD conditions suppress the expression of KiSS-1 in the Arc of Syrian hamsters and Siberian hamsters Simonneaux et al, 2009).…”

“…Kisspeptin stimulates GnRH release via G protein-coupled receptor GPR54 located at the surface of GnRH neurons resulting in activation of the HPG axis (Oakley et al 2009). In LD breeding rodents, melatonin inhibits secretion of kisspeptin from the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (Revel et al 2006, Ansel et al 2010, and administration of kisspeptin restores the reproductive activity in SD conditions (Revel et al 2006, Ansel et al 2011. RFRP-1 and -3 peptides were originally identified as mammalian orthologs of gonadotropin inhibitory hormone (GnIH) that inhibits the HPG axis in birds (Tsutsui et al 2013).…”
