Differential resistance reaction of maize genotypes to maize stem borer (Chilo partellus Swinhoe) at Chitwan, Nepal

Abstract: Maize stem borer (MSB), Chilo partellus Swinhoe, Lepidoptera: Pyralidae is one of the most important insect pest of maize in Nepal. Host plant resistance is the cost-effective, ecologically sound and stable approach to reduce damage by stem borers. Forty four maize genotypes were screened for resistance to maize stem borer at the research field of National Maize Research Program, Rampur during spring seasons (March to June) of two consecutive years 2013 and 2014. The maize genotypes were evaluated in randomize… Show more

“…This intellectual and joint use of diverse insecticides strengthens the insecticide resistance management tactic (Gonella and Alma, 2023). Hence applied demonstration of such potential approaches for insect pest management at farmer's field and monetary appraisal of diverse insecticides is indispensable (Bhandari et al, 2016). In past, research work, granular insecticides were applied through flood irrigation which usually results in wastage of pesticides.…”

“…Damage or larval feeding to the developing point of maize plants results in "dead hearts", which is significant during the first 2-3 weeks after seedlings emerge [16][17]. This type of feeding is described by pin holes and window panes [18][19]. Maize stem borer grows constantly throughout the year when host plants exist and temperature is favorable for their development.…”

“…Intelligent use of combined diversified insecticides reinforces theinsecticide resistance management approach (Sparks et al, 2001;Akob and Ewete, 2007;Qiao et al, 2007). Therefore practical demonstration of such promising toolsforinsect pest management in farmers' fields and economic evaluation of dissimilar insecticidal treatment is essential (Cugala et al, 2006;Bhandari et al, 2016) A wide range of insecticide chemistries and preparations have been used to control this insect pest (Saeed et al, 2006). Liquid and granular type of insecticides have been found effective against C. partellus (Khan et al, 2020).…”
