Differential Responses of Antioxidants, Abscisic Acid, and Auxin to Deficit Irrigation in Two Perennial Ryegrass Cultivars Contrasting in Drought Tolerance

Abstract: Water deficit is a major limiting factor for grass culture in many regions with physiological mechanisms of tolerance not yet well understood. Antioxidant isozymes and hormones may play important roles in plant tolerance to water deficit. This study was designed to investigate antioxidant enzymes, isozymes, abscisic acid (ABA), and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) responses to deficit irrigation in two perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cultivars contrasting in drought toleranc… Show more

“…The results of this study indicate that the drought tolerant cultivar Alamo had greater ability to scavenge ROS than the drought sensitive Dacotah. Our results agreed with the previous studies, which showed that various drought-tolerant plants present different isozyme patterns during drought stress conditions [40, 41].…”

“…Man et al (2011) noted that IAA in tall fescue declined in response to drought stress. Zhang et al (2015) found that deficit irrigation increased leaf IAA in perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.). A similar result was found with Kentucky bluegrass by Krishnan and Merewitz (2015).…”

“…Alterations in hormone metabolism are associated with plant responses to abiotic stresses (Zhang et al, 2009;Man et al, 2011;Huang et al, 2014;Zhang et al, 2015). Abscisic acid (ABA), cytokinins, and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) are hormones that mediate signaling events involved in plant acclimation to stress and are involved in senescence (Strivastava, 2002;Davies, 2010).…”

“…Hormone content of JA, OPDA, ABA, and IAA was analyzed using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC‐MS/MS) following the procedure described by Zhang et al (2015b) with some modifications. Leaf tissue was collected at 23 d of drought stress, immediately frozen with liquid N, and stored at −80°C for subsequent analysis.…”
