Differential Tolerance of Pumpkin Species to Bentazon, Metribuzin, Trifluralin, and Oxyfluorfen

Abstract: -Response of pumpkin species including Cucurbita pepo convar. Pepo, Cucurbita moschata Duch, Cucurbita pepo, Cucurbita maxima, and Lagenaria vulgaris to bentazon, trifluralin, metribuzin, and oxyfluorfen was evaluated in Outdoor pot experiments in 2014 and 2015. Different postemergence doses (bentazon and oxyfluorfen) and preplant incorporated (metribuzin and trifluralin) herbicides were evaluted on pumpkin species at various growth stages. Results showed that the sensitivity of pumpkins species to applied her… Show more

“…Plants that received herbicide at GS +15, GS +25, and GS +35, had some mature leaves that were increasingly tolerant to residual concentration of herbicide, resulting in lower herbicide injury. Dithiopyr, a similar herbicide as oryzalin, produced a greater reduction in growth when applied at early growth stages [45], and oxyfluorfen injury was also found to be higher on plants exposed to oxyfluorfen at early growth stages compared to late growth stages [27,28]. In our study, after the end of herbicide exposure, leaf visual rating on plants exposed to oxyfluorfen started to recover immediately.…”

“…Complete recovery from phytotoxicity in rice was seen just a month after oxyfluorfen exposure [26]. Plant injury associated with oxyfluorfen exposure is often more acute when plants are exposed to oxyfluorfen at early growth stages compared to late growth stages [27,28].…”

“…Bentazon symptoms were observed 3 DAT and included yellowing (chlorosis) of leaf tissue followed by death (necrosis) of the tissue, beginning around the leaf margins and progressing towards the center. Similar symptoms were observed in other susceptible crops (Han & Wang, 2002; Nosratti et al., 2017; Willians & Nelson, 2014). Bentazon is a photosystem II inhibitor that competes with plastoquinone for the binding site on the D1 protein, blocking electron transport from photosystem II.…”

“…A diminuição e posterior paralisação do crescimento das plantas são consequências da ação desses herbicidas inibidores Protoporfirinogenio Oxidase, pois a inibição dessa enzima contribui para a redução da produção de clorofila (Silva et al, 2007). Nosratti et al (2017) crescimento, altura das plantas e área foliar na cultura da mamona (Almeida et al, 2018).…”
