Differentially regulated cell surface expression of leukocyte adhesion receptors on neutrophils

Abstract: To elucidate the molecular mechanisms accounting for hemodialysis-induced neutropenia, the regulation of plasma membrane expression of leukocyte adhesion glycoproteins was investigated by both flow cytometry and immunoprecipitation techniques. The members of the LFA family of integrins, Mac-1/Mo1 (CD11/CD18) and gp150/95 (CD11c/CD18), involved in adhesion of myeloid cells to endothelia and other substrates, were found to be overexpressed on the plasma membrane of neutrophils from patients undergoing hemodialys… Show more

“…However, CD43 shedding has been shown to occur in vivo on circulating PMN during hemodialysis (42) and during PMN migration to inflammation sites (43). Our data suggest that the juxtamembranous clip B partially escapes plasma inhibition.…”

“…No (10,13,14) or only minor (11) upregulation was observed during dialysis with polyacrylonitrile and polyamide membranes. A correlation between the upregulation of CD11b across the dialyzer at the fifth minute of dialysis and the decrease in granulocyte count was found (12).…”

“…CD11c/CD18 (CR4, p150/95), another member of the leukocyte integrin family, also showed an upregulation during dialysis with unmodified cellulose membranes (13,15,16); however this phenomenon was not confirmed by Stuard et al (10). The expression of CD11a/CD18 (LFA-1, leukocyte function antigen-1) with whatever membrane did not change during dialysis, (8, 10,11,13,15).…”
