“…CumIey demonstrated that the sera of the parental species and the species hybrids could be differentiated from each of the others, and that in the backcross birds there was segregation of species-specific components according to genetic expectations. For example, there were probably four serum antigens, undoubtedly proteins, peculiar to S. chinensis in contrast to S. risoria and three or four peculiar to S. senegalensis in contrast to S. risoria (Cumley et al, 1941; see also Cumley & Irwin, 1940, 1942. Unfortunately, there was no evidence as to what proteins were involved in these species-specific differences.…”
