The COVID‐19 pandemic led to significant adaptations to healthcare. Provision of mental healthcare in a changing environment presented healthcare workers with unique challenges and demands, including changes in workload and expectations. To inform current and future healthcare service responses, and adaptations, the current review aimed to collate and examine the impact of the pandemic on mental healthcare workers (MHWs). We conducted a rapid systematic review to examine the overall impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on MHWs. Searches were conducted in Ovid Medline and PsycInfo and restricted to articles published from 2020. Inclusion criteria specified articles written in English, published in peer‐reviewed journals, and that examined any outcome of the impact of COVID‐19 on MHWs; 55 articles fulfilled these criteria. Outcomes were categorized into ‘work‐related outcomes’ and ‘personal outcomes’. Mental healthcare workers worldwide experienced a range of work‐related and personal adversities during the pandemic. Key work‐related outcomes included increased workload, changed roles, burnout, decreased job satisfaction, telehealth challenges, difficulties with work‐life balance, altered job performance, vicarious trauma and increased workplace violence. Personal outcomes included decreased well‐being, increased psychological distress and psychosocial difficulties. These outcomes differed between inpatient, outpatient and remote settings. The COVID‐19 pandemic significantly altered the delivery of mental healthcare and MHWs experienced both work‐related and personal adversities during the COVID‐19 pandemic. With the continuation of changes introduced to healthcare in the initial stages of the pandemic, it will be important to maintain efforts to monitor negative outcomes and ensure supports for MHWs, going forward.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has multiple negative impacts on the psychiatric health of both those previously infected and not infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Moreover, the negative impacts of COVID-19 are closely associated with geographical region, culture, medical system, and ethnic background. We summarized the evidence of the impact of COVID-19 on the psychiatric health of the Korean population. This narrative review included thirteen research articles, which investigated the impact of COVID-19 on the psychiatric health of Koreans. COVID-19 survivors were reported to have a 2.4 times greater risk of developing psychiatric disorders compared to members of a control group, and anxiety and stress-related disorders were the most common newly diagnosed psychiatric illnesses. Studies also reported that COVID-19 survivors had a 3.33-fold higher prevalence of insomnia, a 2.72-fold higher prevalence of mild cognitive impairment, and a 3.09-fold higher prevalence of dementia compared to the control group. In addition, more than four studies have highlighted that the medical staff members, including nurses and medical students, exhibit a greater negative psychiatric impact of COVID-19. However, none of the articles investigated the biological pathophysiology or mechanism linking COVID-19 and the risk of diverse psychiatric disorders. Moreover, none of the studies were actual prospective studies. Thus, longitudinal studies are needed to more clearly elucidate the effect of COVID-19 on the psychiatric health of the Korean population. Lastly, studies focusing on preventing and treating COVID-19–associated psychiatric problems are needed to provide a benefit in real clinical settings.

COVID-19 has a negative effect on the psychological well-being of psychiatric nurses. Thus, examining the psychosocial response of nurses is important for preventing more serious mental health problems and disruption of the quality of nursing care. This study aimed to evaluate the psychosocial problems of nurses who provided nursing care to patients with mental health disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic. A quantitative study with a cross-sectional design was conducted. The 101 nurses at Central Mental Health Hospital who provide nursing care to patients with mental health disorders were recruited through consecutive sampling. The instruments used were the demographic questionnaire, the Expanded Nursing Stress Scale, Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, and The Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale 25. Univariate and bivariate analyses were used to process the data. The mean score of 45.1 (±24.3) was obtained for the ENSS; around 97% of nurses have a work stress score below the average, 4.95% have mild-moderate anxiety, and 28.7% have a low level of resilience. Work stress and contact frequency, work stress and gender, anxiety and contact frequency, as well as resilience and contact frequency all correlated significantly ( p value <0.05). The Pearson test showed a significant positive correlation between work stress and anxiety ( p : 0.002, r: 0.299). However, there was no significant correlation between anxiety and resilience ( p : 0.643, r: 0.47), nor between work stress and resilience ( p : 0.643; r: 0.47). Psychosocial disorders that psychiatric nurses face include occupational stress, mild-moderate anxiety, and low resilience. The government can create specific infection control guidelines for the mental health setting, and hospital management or ward leaders can also provide support to psychiatric nurses to increase resilience in reducing psychosocial problems.
