Difficulty and Reasons for Sustainable Roadway Design – The Case From Taiwan

Abstract: To accomplish sustainable design, it is essential to understand its barriers or limitations. This study investigated difficulties and their reasons for sustainable design using roadways as an example. A checklist of 60 sustainability items for roadway design was used to interview roadway designers to identify levels of difficulty, reasons for difficulty and proportions of difficulty reasons when designing these sustainability items. The results were analyzed and compared among sustainable items and design work… Show more

“…With the increasingly serious traffic congestion and air pollution problems in China in recent years, sustainable development has become more and more important [58]. Therefore, the sustainable evaluation of construction projects should be carried out [59,60]. And the evaluation index for sustainable development should include not only the index of traffic conditions but also environmental protection.…”

“…Finally, the combustion of the cloud can occur as a flash fire with negligible overpressure. Consequently, the chance that a flammable spill from a road or railway tanker will escalate into a VCE, which occurs as a detonation, is relatively small (Ronza et al 2007;Chang, Tsai 2015). A "hot" BLEVE of a road or railway tanker can be induced by external heating of a tanker vessel followed by catastrophic failure of the tank and explosive release of boiling liquid and expanding vapour.…”
