Diffraction efficiency of polarization holographic gratings recorded in azopolymer thin films coated using different solvents

Abstract: We present a study of the diffraction efficiencies of polarization holographic gratings recorded in thin films of the azopolymer PAZO (poly[1-[4-(3-carboxy-4-hydroxyphenylazo) benzenesulfonamido]-1,2-ethanediyl, sodium salt]). Two series of layers have been prepared using two different solvents-distilled water and methanol. The gratings are inscribed by two plain waves with orthogonal circular polarizations (left and right circular) from a He-Cd gas laser (442 nm) at recording angle 20°, corresponding to grati… Show more

“…A widely investigated azopolymer is poly[1-[4-(3-carboxy-4-hydroxyphenylazo)benzene sulfonamido]-1,2-ethanediyl, sodium salt], commonly denoted as PAZO, which is commercially available. PAZO is often the preferred material for polarization holography by many research groups, due to the high values of the photoinduced birefringence and large amplitude of the surface relief gratings [18,20,[35][36][37][38][39][40]. Another important advantage of the azopolymer PAZO is that it is water soluble, thus toxic organic solvents, which are usually required for the film deposition of other azopolymers, can be avoided.…”

“…Diverse applications have inspired the investigation of large number of azopolymers [117][118][119][120]. A commercially available azopolymer, commonly denoted as PAZO (poly[1-4-(3-carboxy-4hydrophenylazo)benzensulfonamido]-1,2-ethanediyl, sodium salt]), is often the preferred material for polarization holography by many research groups due to the high values of photoinduced birefringence and large amplitude of the surface relief gratings inscribed in it [121][122][123][124][125][126][127][128][129][130][131][132]. In addition, its solubility in water and methanol allows for the easy preparation of nanocomposite materials using water suspensions of nanoparticles, for example gold or silver NPs.…”
