Diffuse Ferroelectric Phase Transition and Long-Range Order of DiluteKTa1xNbx

Abstract: Refractive-index and linear-birefringence measurements on KTai_ x Nb x 0 3 , with x = 0.008, 0.012, and 0.02, reveal smeared phase transitions into long-range order. In accordance with previous caloric, second-harmonic-generation, dielectric, and x-ray results, the crystal optical data can be explained on the basis of a "cooperative dipole glass" model. This involves local ordering within the finite Curie region of a diffuse phase transition followed by a strain-induced collective reorientation of frozen-in mi… Show more

“…Owing to different Ta-O binding characteristics, this state does not posses translational symmetry, although deviations from the uniformly ordered polar state are weak. In [34] the refractive index and linear birefringence of KTN 0.8, 1.2, 2 have been interpreted as evidence of a 'cooperative dipole glass'. Clustering phenomena with the presence of polar microregions well above T C and appearance of ferroelectric macroregions at T C were stressed in first-order Raman [35 -37] and X-ray diffuse scattering [38] studies.…”

“…11 Also, the studies of refractive index and birefringence suggest "cooperative dipole glass" model in which strain-induced collective ordered clusters appear at T C-T by long range strain fields. 17 The drastic increase in relaxation times accompanied by extremely growing PNRs is related to the increase in the interaction among PNRs ͓Fig. 3͑a͔͒.…”

“…The existence of PNRs in a cubic phase was studied by various measurement such as inelastic neutron scattering, 13 Raman scattering, 14,15 infrared absorption, 16 refractive-index, and linear-birefringence. 17 The polarization fluctuations of PNRs in a cubic phase is the key factor of understanding a cubic-tetragonal phase transition. Therefore, the study of the dynamical property of the KTN is very important to make clear the dynamics of PNRs and the nature of a ferroelectric phase transition.…”
