Diffuse inflammatory lesions in patients treated with interferon alfa and ribavirin for hepatitis C: a series of 20 patients

Abstract: The incidence of inflammatory skin lesions at a distance from injection sites in patients treated with interferon alfa and ribavirin for chronic hepatitis C is currently unknown, but this adverse event must be taken into consideration as it may lead to the transient or definitive interruption of treatment.

“…Topical corticosteroids and anti-H 1 antihistaminic drugs were sufficient to alleviate the symptoms in most patients, allowing the treatment to be continued. Inflammatory eczema-like reactions at a distance of injection sites induced by interferon therapy have already been observed in patients with hepatitis C virus infection treated with low-dose interferon and ribavirin [14]. In these cases however, the eruption appears to be severer and is often localized or predominant in distal and/or photoexposed areas.…”

“…This drug may also induce a large number of cutaneous reactions. These are psoriasis, eczema or lichenoid eruptions, skin dryness, granulomatous infiltrates, photosensitivity and acrosyndromes [24,[25][26][27][28].…”

“…This reason gives rise to thought that skin eruptions might be seen more frequent due to ribavirin. In some of the studies, skin lesions were resolved without discontinuation of therapy in the majority of patients (9,10,11). In one of these studies performed by Patrk and colleagues, it is pointed that the number of patients followed without discontinuation of therapy was less than the number of those continued therapy (9).…”
