Diffuse type testicular seminoma in a stallion

Abstract: A 7-year-old stallion with progressive left testicular enlargement was presented. Grossly, the excised testicle measured 25 × 15 × 12 cm and weighed 3.7 kg. It was multinodular with a gray-white surface; however, the right testis was normal. Histologically, the neoplastic cells were disseminated diffusely in the tumoral stroma with a minimal fibrovascular stroma. Neoplastic cells were round to polygonal with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and large round to oval vesicular or hyperchromatic nucleous with a sin… Show more

“…Seminoma has been described in species including dogs, horses, humans and rams with a distinct macroscopic presentation in each case [1,2,5,8]. The present findings are the second ever seminoma reported in goats, and particularly this case presented liver metastasis, showing the pathologic potential of this neoplasia for this species, and it differed from those reported previously [6] who described ulcerative lesions in, and adhesion of the skin covering the testis.…”

“…Seminomas are germ cell tumors mainly originating from spermatogonia in the seminiferous tubules and are characterized by spherical or polyhedral neoplastic cells [4,8]. Seminoma has been described in several domestic animal species [1,2,8] and in humans [5]. Nevertheless, in goats, only a single case was reported previously [6].…”

“…Seminomas are the most frequently reported testicular tumors in horses and arise from spermatogenic cells that usually occur unilaterally (more frequently right‐sided) . In advanced stages, as in this case, the entire testicular tissue can be replaced and represents the diffuse type of seminoma . Cryptorchidism seems to be a predisposing factor .…”
