COVID-19 has brought to the fore drastic and transformative changes to MICE tourism. The current study therefore sought to examine the adaptive responses employed by the MICE sector of South Africa to survive and maintain business continuity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Adopting a qualitative research design, 19 representatives of various subsectors of the MICE industry (including organisers, suppliers, and associations) were interviewed. The data reveals that the immediate strategies implemented by many MICE organisations involved the reevaluation of their operational costs. Moreover, the study found that the sector has readjusted its business models to include virtual events in order to ensure recovery and resilience in light of the pandemic. The study argues the importance of understanding adaptive strategies as broadening theory on tourism and crises (specifically to the MICE sector) as well as understanding the process of sector resilience post-COVID-19.

Research background: The restrictions pose a threat to the creative industries, as some companies and self-employed persons suffer major losses. Many freelancers and micro-enterprises work in the creative industries. They depend more than others on events and markets for earning money. The 33 288 employees that comprise the CIs are therefore hit particularly hard by COVID-19. Purpose of the article: The aim of the paper is to measure the Covid-19 impacts on the Creative industries in Slovakia and evaluate the economic compensation suffered from Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic. The compensation payments consist of a certain percentage of the income from the year 2019 and encompass business expenses such as rent and other fixed costs. Methods: Our calculations on the extent to which the creative industries (CIs) and its sub-markets are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic are based on data from Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic, the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic and the FINSTAT database for the year 2019 and 2020. Findings & Value added: The effects of the ordered closures and the associated effects in the individual sub-sectors and occupational fields are estimated. For this reason, economic effects are calculated and recorded based on a scenario analysis. In a second step, the international perspective on the COVID-19 pandemic will be considered. Overall, the analysis of the consequences of the pandemic for the creative industries is intended to provide an overview of the possible consequences in the creative industries and, together with the knowledge about the procedures in other countries, to make political action needs more clearly recognisable.

This study examines factors of importance for the pricing of virtual academic conferences based on information on their quality attributes. Data are based on 76 virtual conferences held or planned to be held in the field of tourism and related fields between April 2020 and December 2021. The distribution of fees is skewed with a median price of US$61 and an average of US$126. One fourth of the conferences is free of charge, although there is a trend toward increased prices the longer the time elapse from the outbreak of the pandemic, ceteris paribus. Count data model estimations show that the conference fee depends on size, academic field, and location of the host. A one-day conference is on average US$60 cheaper than a two-day event while pure tourism conferences are on average US$34 more expensive than those in related fields. Conferences in the United Kingdom have the lowest fees while hybrid format is a factor of specific importance for the pure tourism events. Reputation of the host university and whether the conference is held by an association are aspects of no significance for the fee.
