Diffusion in ion exchange resins

Abstract: Observations on the rate of ion exchange in Dowex 50W resins are reported. These measurements were made under conditions where solid diffusion was the governing phenomenon for six pairs of ions sodium-zinc, sodium-silver, silver-aluminum, zinc-copper, zinc-aluminum, and aluminum-cerium (trivalent). The effects of temperature and of resin cross-linkage were studied with the first system. Exchange in both directions was studied for each pair except the last.Interpretation with a Fick's law model was accomplished… Show more

“…The WDS results show the highest K 2 O content found in the IE glasses to be 9.3–9.5% (for only two points sampled by WDS), while 8.0–8.5% is the common K 2 O content near the IE surface. The maxima near the surface in the 405 and especially the 420 °C sample are not expected from diffusion theory, unless large amounts of Li + are transferring from the glass to the salt bath, and are likely an artifact of the surface condition. A mole fraction of 0.085 for K 2 O corresponds to a relative Li 2 O fraction of 0.72; therefore, all IE glass compositions are in the range of 0.72–1 Li 2 O total alkali fraction.…”

“…Esta es una técnica empleada para discriminar entre difusión en el interior de la partícula y en la película que rodea a la partícula [7][8][9] . Para ello, durante la experiencia se retira la resina del reactor y se deja en reposo para luego volver a introducir la resina en la solución y continuar el proceso de intercambio iónico.…”
