Diffusion of ground state (3s21S0) and metastable (3s3p3P0,1,2) magnesium atoms in He and Ne

Abstract: The momentum transfer cross sections and the diffusion coefficients of ground state and metastable magnesium atoms in He (300-3000 K) and Ne (300-2800 K) are calculated. The measured diffusion coefficient of ground state Mg in He, D=340+or-27 cm2 s-1 for 1 Torr, which is determined at 300 K in this work, as well as all other experimental results at higher temperatures agree well with the calculations.
