Diffusion of research-based instructional strategies: the case of SCALE-UP

Abstract: Background: Many innovative teaching strategies have been developed under the assumption that documenting successful student learning outcomes at the development site is enough to spread the innovation successfully to secondary sites. Since this 'show them and they will adopt' model has yet to produce the desired large-scale transformation, this study examines one innovative teaching strategy that has demonstrated success in spreading. This instructional strategy, Student-Centered Active Learning Environment w… Show more

“…Instructors' perceptions depend on the specific innovation being considered and are influenced by the means by which they learned about the innovation.-Instructors are exposed to RBIS through a variety of means, most typically through conversations with professional colleagues, journal articles and (or) books, formal presentations, or workshops [26,34,35]. Through these communication mechanisms, instructors (at times in negotiation with others) develop some understanding of what a particular RBIS is and this invariably has some dependence on the form of the particular innovation.…”

“…In prior work, we used a web survey to develop a census of SCALE-UP users in the United States [21]. The survey results provided evidence that some secondary sites achieved successful, sustained implementations.…”

“…A web survey and a census of SCALE-UP users was a precursor to this study [21]. In fall 2013, survey invitations were sent to the approximately 1300 members of the developer's SCALE-UP database.…”
