Digestibility of dietary components and amino acids in animal and plant protein feed ingredients in striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) fingerlings

Abstract: The apparent digestibility (AD) of dietary components, energy and essential amino acids (EAA) of selected locally available animal and plant protein feed ingredients in striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) fingerlings was studied. The AD of the test ingredients (ADi) differed (P < 0.05) and ranged from 81.1% to 90.8%, for ADi DM , from 84.0% to 95.0% for ADi CP , from 78.4% to 86.9% for ADi OM and from 79.0% to 87.8% for ADi GE . The highest ADi DM , ADi CP and ADi OM in the test ingredients were foun… Show more

“…In a study from Glencross et al (2008), a highly significant relationship between digestibility coefficients of protein and sum of AAs in diets was found (R = 0.8678, P = 0.001). Notwithstanding, our determined digestibilities of individual AAs varied and did not reflect ADI CP as also reported by Da et al (2013), Suarez et al (2013) and Zhang et al (2015) in studies with catfish, cobia (Rachycentron canadum) and bullfrog (Rana (Lithobates) catesbeiana). To our knowledge, the reasons for these intravariations of ADI TAA seem to be still unclear and should be suggested as topic of future research, as also mentioned by Yamamoto et al (1997).…”

“…Pangasianodon hypophthalmus (Siluriformes, Pangasiidae; formerly known as Pangasius hypophthalmus ) (Sauvage, 1878) is an omnivorous freshwater fish (Da, Lundh, & Lindberg, ) that originated in the Mekong and Tchao Phraya River basins (Slembrouck, Baras, Subagja, Hung, & Legendre, ). To date, Vietnam is the world's largest producer of P. hypophthalmus .…”

“…In the first approach, the amount of faecal waste can be reduced by improving feed digestibility. So far, few studies are available on the digestibility of feed for striped catfish (Hien et al, 2010;Da et al, 2013) and even few studies address the waste management in striped catfish. Improving feed digestibility may imply that feeds will cost more money (Ngoc, 2016).…”
