Alternative protein feedstuffs are potential surrogates for fish meal in the diet of Florida pompano. This study was designed to evaluate the replacement of fish meal with meat and bone meal in a soybean meal‐based diet for Florida pompano. In Trial I (10 wk), the basal diet (FM15, formulated to contain 40% crude protein and 10% lipid) containing 15% fish meal was modified by the isonitrogenous replacement of fish meal with meat and bone meal producing diets with 10 (FM10), 5 (FM05), and 0% (FM0) fish meal. In Trial II (8 wk), the FM0 served as the basal diet (Tau 0) and was modified by the additive supplementation of taurine to produce three test diets containing 0.25 (Tau 0.25), 0.5 (Tau 0.50), and 0.75% (Tau 0.75) taurine. In Trial I, reduced weight gain (220.1%), feed efficiency (0.31), and survival (84.5%) were observed in fish fed the FM0 diet (P < 0.05). In Trial II, the supplementation of taurine improved the growth performance, survival, and protein and energy retention efficiencies of Florida pompano (P < 0.05). These results indicate that the supplementation of taurine was required in these feed formulations and that meat and bone meal is a good alternative ingredient for fish meal in soybean meal‐based diets for Florida pompano.

Accurate digestibility coefficients for protein, energy, and lipid are needed by feed formulators to optimize diets to meet nutritional requirements and to substitute ingredients cost‐effectively. Of particular interest is protein, which accounts for the majority of shrimp feed content and expense. The current study evaluated seven cottonseed meal and protein products. Most of the samples were derived from a glandless cotton variety that lacks significant levels of the antinutritive compound, gossypol. The various protein fractions were evaluated for apparent crude protein, crude lipid, and energy digestibility when fed to juvenile Pacific White Shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. Apparent energy digestibility for the protein fractions derived from the glandless seed ranged from 76.7% for ground kernels to 94.6% for protein isolate, and these values were greater than the value obtained for the commercial meal that contained gossypol (64%). Apparent protein digestibility for the six glandless‐cotton‐based samples varied from 72.3% for the ground full‐fat kernels to 94.1% for the protein isolate, and these values were mostly higher than the value obtained for the commercial meal (82.3%). The high apparent digestibility values demonstrate that low‐gossypol cottonseed protein products may be useful as a cost‐effective replacement for more expensive protein sources in L. vannamei diets.

Use of Lipid‐Extracted Distillers Dried Grain with Solubles (DDGS) in Diets for Pacific White Shrimp

A series of trials (one growth trial and two digestibility trials) were conducted to evaluate the response of Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei to the inclusion of lipid‐extracted distillers dried grain with solubles (LE‐DDGS). In the growth trial, a practical basal diet was developed for shrimp using soybean meal (56.76% diet) and fish meal (6% diet) as the primary protein sources. The LE‐DDGS was substituted for soybean meal on an isonitrogenous basis at five levels of inclusion (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40%) with lysine supplemented to diets containing 30% and 40% LE‐DDGS. A sixth diet containing 40% LE‐DDGS but without a lysine supplement was also evaluated. The diets were offered to four replicate (15 shrimp/tank) groups of shrimp per treatment over an 8‐week growth trial. At the end of the growth trial shrimp offered diets containing from 0% to 20% LE‐DDGS performed similarly. Performance of shrimp fed higher levels of LE‐DDGS was reduced but similar to each other. Removing the lysine supplement from the diet containing 40% LE‐DDGS did not result in reduced performance of the shrimp, indicating lysine was not limiting in these feeds. In two digestibility trials, the LE‐DDGS digestibility coefficients were determined in Pacific white shrimp for dry matter (ADMD), energy (AED), and crude protein (APD) using 1% chromic oxide as the inert marker with 70:30 replacement strategies. The ADMD, AED, and APD coefficient values for LE‐DDGS were 53.77, 36.94, and 55.71 for digestibility trial 1 and 42.43, 44.65, and 20.87 for digestibility trial 2, respectively. Results from the digestibility data do not match the results of the growth trial, as poor digestibility would have resulted in more pronounced reduction in performance. Hence, this digestibility technique may not be appropriate for this type of ingredient. Based on the observed results the inclusion of LE‐DDGS up to 20% of the diet is recommended.
