Digital Control of Multiphase Series Capacitor Buck Converter Prototype for the Powering of HL-LHC Inner Triplet Magnets

Abstract: A major upgrade will be conducted in the Large Hardon Collider (LHC) at CERN. This high luminosity (HL) version of the LHC will increase the nominal luminosity by a factor of five. One of the key technologies of the HL-LHC are the new superconducting Inner Triplet (IT) magnets, responsible of producing high magnetic fields to focus particle beams. To power the IT magnets from the grid, a multi-stage power supply with an intermediate 24 V battery pack is being considered. In such topology, a lowvoltage high-cur… Show more

“…Modulation techniques like hybrid pulse width modulation can minimize these losses. Multiphase DC-DC interleaved buck converters [14] divide output current among phases, lowering stress on switches and conduction losses. Despite increasing complexity in PV systems, these advances aim to ensure continuous operation and enhance conversion efficiency, optimizing power generation and usage.…”

“…Figure 2c shows the series capacitor Buck converter [10][11][12][13][14], where the switched capacitor (SC) converter is combined with the interleaved Buck converter. The features of SC converter make the equivalent input voltage decrease to the half, then the duty cycle is extended to 2 times and a higher stepdown ratio can be achieved.…”
