Three endemic species of Xyris (Xyridaceae, Poales) are currently recognized in New Caledonia. A recent multivariate analysis of 18 morphological characters based on 129 specimens of Xyris from New Caledonia, supported by 10 anatomical and micromorphological observations, suggested that three species should be recognized in the New Caledonian archipelago. However, the three published names did not correspond to the three entities identified via the multivariate analyses. The results showed that Xyris neocaledonia Rendle was morphologically distinct but requires lectotypification, Xyris guillauminii Conert was indistinct from X. pancheri Rendle, and that a new morphologically distinct species required description. We therefore propose to clarify the taxonomy of the genus for New Caledonia, by designating a lectotype, making this synonymy and describing the new species. The new species, Xyris desquamatus J.R.Morel & Munzinger, sp. nov., has the remarkable feature of leaves that are shed as the plant senesces, and is reflected in the specific epithet for this new species. Line drawings are provided for the new species, along with colour photos for the three New Caledonian Xyris species and a distribution map. Three identification keys are provided, the first based on vegetative characters, the second on reproductive characters and the third on anatomical features of the leaf. Xyris desquamatus is preliminarily assigned an IUCN risk of extinction assessment of vulnerable.

The herbaria of the World, with 387.5M specimens (Thiers, 2019), are being rapidly digitized. At least 77M plant specimens (20%) are already databased throughout the globe in the standard form of GBIF-mediated data. About 55M specimens are imaged, but only 21.6M of them are concentrated in the top-ten largest digital herbaria-P, L, NY, US, PE, BR, MEXU, MW, K, and MPU. The contribution of smaller herbaria has been steadily growing in the last few years due to cost reduction, and usage of platforms and solutions developed by the leaders. The global trend is largely the same in Russia, where a dozen herbaria started to scan their holdings after imaging the specimens of the nation's second-largest herbarium (Seregin, 2016). A web-resource, the Moscow Digital Herbarium (https://plant. depo.msu.ru/), was launched by Lomonosov Moscow State University in October, 2016 for publication of specimens imaged and databased in the Moscow University Herbarium (MW) (Seregin, 2018). From 2015 to 2018, a commercial partner scanned 93% of the regular herbarium collections at 300 dpi and 100% of the types at 600 dpi due to the financial support from the Russian Science Foundation. As of 31 December 2018, the web-portal included 968,031 images of 971,732 specimens. About one-third (i.e., 323,015 records) were georeferenced by that time. This dataset is available in GBIF (https://doi.org/10.15468/cpnhcc) since late 2017 and updated in a weekly synchronization mode.

A digital inventory of the section “Foreign Asia” of the collection of vascular plants of the Krasnoborov herbarium (NS) of the Central Siberian Botanical garden SB RAS was carried out. The workflow of converting a collection to digital form is described. The Scanned material is available in the digital herbarium of the CSBG SB RAS on the Institute’s server at http://herb.csbg.nsc.ru:8081, as well as on the portal GBIF.org. Taxonomic, geographical and historical analyses of collections, as well as a review of leading collectors, was conducted.
