In this paper mean energy lateral histograms have been developed and used for the translation of frames detection and for the estimation of a shift vector in large image frames. 2-D translation problem is solved by two almost independent 1-D problems based on the mean energy lateral histograms. We formulate a simple optimization for estimating vertical or horizontal translations of the frame. The optimization goal is to find the best match between energies (squared norms) of rows (columns) of the image and the reference frame. The shift estimate is calculated as the minimizer of the least squares, maximum deviation or the sum of absolute deviations criterion. However, the first criterion is preferred, the last two almost always gave the same results when the noise level is low. The proposed method is faster than the FFT based phase-correlation approach. An iterative version of the algorithm is presented which is very reliable and usually converges in at most two iterations. A randomized version of the method which reduce further the computational cost for large images problems is also proposed. Experimental results are provided and discussed.

Abstract. This paper presents a data-driven approach to profile fitting where global constraints are imposed to local measurements. The local measurements are obtained from partial analysis of the objects under consideration. Prior knowledge of the object under analysis provides global constraints. To illustrate these concepts, it is developed the exercise of measuring a gear's boundary from its teeth profile. A framework is developed to extract local parameters from frame to frame and to enforce morphologic constraints over the whole sequence. It is shown how a combination of accurate local processing techniques and global knowledge can solve the tradeoff between what can be perceived locally and interpreted globally.

Use of fourier and hartley transforms in motion estimation: A comparative study

A comparison between the use of Fourier and Hartley transforms for motion estimation of multiple moving objects in image sequences is presented. The spectrum of the two transforms show that the temporal frequencies at the peaks (of the spectrum) is related to the velocity of the moving objects. The analysis shows that the Hartley technique is faster and requires less memory space than the Fourier technique. However, it gives the velocity of the moving objects but not the direction. The Fourier spectrum, on the other hand, gives the velocity and direction. An efficient implementation is possible by using the Hartley transform to estimate the temporal frequencies of the peaks and hence the velocities. The fast Fourier transform is then used to compute the spectrum at those peaks. The direction is easily found from the Fourier spectrum by reversing the sign of the temporal frequency corresponding to the peak.
