“…Given the prevalence of mobile technology and social media in society, and its salience in the lives of young people (Ofcom, 2022), narratives of choice to embrace or not to embrace technology may become an oversimplification of reality. As outlined in a paper following an international webinar, “no matter how hard we try, outdoor education experiences may be considered as bookended by the technological architectures that shape society” (van Kraalingen et al, 2022, p. 9). This bookending of outdoor education experiences by both social media and broader sociotechnical infrastructures now represents a pressing question which centers on the effectiveness of technology removal in outdoor education and whether such experiences resonate with learners’ networked realities.…”

“…It depends on how that digital technology is used, and the way it is managed. If we accept Reed's position on accepting the omnipresence of digital technology and the inevitable arrival of these new devices (van Kraalingen et al, 2022), further research is required to explore the impact that these wearable, externally connected, smart devices may have on outdoor learning pedagogies. In doing so, we can hopefully monitor how digital technologies impact our abilities to be present with places, ourselves, and other people in outdoor education experiences.…”

“…In the field of outdoor education and outdoor studies, researchers have raised specific concerns about the potential negative impacts of the use of mobile technologies on outdoor learning. Some primary concerns include distracting students from the learning experience and natural environment (Smith et al, 2016;Hills and Thomas, 2020), disrupting social interactions among students, fueling a technologydriven false sense of safety (van Kraalingen et al, 2022;van Kraalingen, 2023), and possibly limiting the development of certain skills (Smith et al, 2016).…”
