PurposeThis article aims to explore how the mapping strategies between user requirements expressed by the humanities researchers lead to a better customization of user-driven digital humanities tools and to the creation of innovative functionalities, which can directly affect the way of doing research in a digital context.Design/methodology/approachIt describes the user-driven development of a tool that helps researchers in the quantitative and qualitative analysis of large textbook collections.FindingsThis article presents an exemplary user journey map, which shows the different steps of the digital transformation process and how the humanities researchers are involved for (1) producing innovative research solutions, comprehensive and personalized reports, and (2) customizing access to content data used for the analysis of digital documents. The article is based on a case study on a German textbooks collection and content analysis functionalities.Originality/valueThe focus of this article is the reiterative research process, in which humanists (from the human centred point of view) starts from an initial research question, using quantitative and qualitative data and develops both the research question and the answers to it by with the aim to find patterns in the content and structure of educational media. Thus, from the viewpoint of digital transformation the humanist is part of the interaction between digitization and digitalization processes, where he/she uses digital data, metadata, reports and findings created and supported by the digital tools for research analysis.

In a dynamic and competitive business environment, managerial ability emerges as a pivotal strategic factor for capitalizing on new opportunities within the technological revolution and digital transformation of enterprises. Based on data from Chinese A-share listed firms spanning from 2009 to 2019, this study integrates insights from the upper echelons theory and the behavioral theory of the firm to investigate the moderating roles of historical aspiration shortfalls and industrial competitiveness on the relationship between managerial ability and enterprise digital transformation from internal and external pressure perspectives. Our findings indicate a positive impact of managerial ability on digital transformation. The relationship between managerial ability and digital transformation is reinforced by historical aspiration shortfalls; nevertheless, industrial competitiveness has attenuated the aforementioned relationship. This study contributes to a better understanding of the strategic implications of managerial ability within the context of organizational innovation strategies. It offers valuable insights into the decision-making processes of firms as they navigate the challenges of digital transformation within an ever-evolving business environment.

Digital Humanities (DH) provide a broad spectrum of functionalities and tools that enable the enrichment of both quantitative and qualitative research methods in the humanities. It has been widely recognized that DH can help in curating and analysing large amounts of data. However, digital tools can also support research processes in the humanities that are interested in detailed analyses of how empirical sources are patterned. Following a methodological differentiation between close and distant reading with regard to textual analysis, this article describes the Edumeres Toolbox, a digital tool for textbook analysis. The Edumeres Toolbox is an outcome of the continuous interdisciplinary exchange between computer scientists and humanist researchers, whose expertise is crucial to convert information into knowledge by means of (critical) interpretation and contextualization. This paper presents a use case in order to describe the various functionalities of the Edumeres Toolbox and their use for the analysis of a collection of Arabic textbooks. Hereby, it shows how the interaction between humanist researchers and computer scientists in this digital process produces innovative research solutions and how the tool enables users to discover structural and linguistic patterns and develop innovative research questions. Finally, the paper describes challenges recognized by humanist researchers in using digital tools in their work, which still require in-depth research and practical efforts from both parties to improve the tool performance.
