Digital Twin Certified: Employing Virtual Testing of Digital Twins in Manufacturing to Ensure Quality Products

Abstract: Quality products are a main focus for manufacturers. Product users only determine a product to be a quality product if it performs in operation to the user’s perceived standard. Product manufactures need to take a product lifecycle quality (PLQ) perspective of quality and not simply focus on manufacturing quality control, which is more accurately specification control. Manufacturing is the key phase where products take their physical form. There are increasing costs and decreasing risks of different physical q… Show more

“…This is because information technology decreases at an exponential rate, while physical resource costs increase at the rate of inflation. Figure 6 shows the impact of this over time [34]. The caveat is that, for simple, one-time tasks, wasting resources through trial and error may be more economical.…”

“…The concept of the digital twin was originally proposed by Michael Grieves of the University of Michigan in 2002, defining it as "a digital product corresponding to a physical product" [8]. Subsequently, NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) further refined the digital twin concept in 2012 [9].…”

“…In the field of centring machining, Shiau-Cheng Shiu et al As the key enabling technology of intelligent manufacturing, digital twin technology promotes significant changes in manufacturing technology systems and models [4][5][6][7][8]. In recent years, the related theoretical system has been improved, and the key technology of digital twins has been developed gradually [9][10][11]; digital twins have been successfully applied in the digital machining of complex equipment. Plakhotnik, D. et al [12] elaborated on applying the digital twin concept in digital machining and investigated the digital representations of different objects involved in the machining process.…”
