Digitally controlled programmable high‐speed variable optical attenuator

Abstract: A digital closed‐loop controlled variable optical attenuator (VOA) module using an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) chip for optical‐power‐fluctuation suppression is demonstrated in this paper. A VOA based on transparent electro‐optical ceramic, OptoCeramic® PLZT, is used to provide high‐speed optical power control. With logarithm amplifiers and A‐D‐A feedback circuitry, this VOA module could be designed to operate as either an attenuator or a power controller. The module can be used to filter out the opti… Show more

“…Especially, the microstrip slot antennas were attractive because of their wide impedance bandwidth, such as dual slot, single slot, and linear taper slot antennas, whose impedance bandwidth can get to 25, 57, and 70% (VSWR < 2.0), respectively [1][2][3]. Through adopting special slot shapes and special feeding methods, the impedance bandwidth of lager than 100% can be achieved [4][5][6][7][8]. In addition, the slot antennas are easy to generate CP operation through using various perturbation configurations, which operate on the same principle of detuning degenerate modes of a …”

“…Recently, several VGTF design methods have been investigated. These include the use of tunable Mach-Zehnder filters [4], micro-opto-mechanics based voltage-controlled spectral attenuator [5], and some other kinds of variable optical attenuators [6][7][8].…”
