Abstract

Highlights:Graphical/Tabular Abstract  High masonry walls having buttress  Modeling of walls and numerical calculation methods  Out-of-plane seismic resistanceIn this study the seismic resistance of high masonry walls having buttresses has been investigated by equivalent static analysis method. For this purpose, a numerical model developed for the stability analysis of masonry elements with rectangular cross-section has been utilized. Seismic coefficient versus horizontal displacement curves have been obtained for a reference buttressed wall and for the qibla wall of the Süleymaniye Mosque which has a strong buttress system. The results obtained for the reference wall were also compared with the results of the ABAQUS program. As shown Figure 1 good correlations obtained between the results. Theory and Methods:For the calculations, a numerical model based on the discretization of the walls into elements has been used.With the calculation procedure of this model resistance of the walls against seismic forces has been obtained. Results:It has been determined that with respect to seismic resistance, buttressed walls are stronger than plain walls, as expected. Moreover, it has been seen once more that Mimar Sinan who amongst the greatest architects of the world architecture had accomplished not only aesthetics but also resistance requirements in his structures. Conclusion:Performed calculations have shown that buttresses make important contribution to the seismic resistance of masonry walls. Results of the method of presented work and that of the ABAQUS are in good agreement.
