Dillapiol: A Pyrethrum Synergist for Control of the Colorado Potato Beetle

Abstract: Dillapiol, the main constituent in dill Anethum sowa Roxb. ex Fleming (Apiaceae) oil and wild pepper, Piper aduncum L. (Piperaceae), is an effective cytochrome P450 inhibitor similar to piperonylbutoxide (PBO). Laboratory and field trials with pyrethrum Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium (Trevir.) vis. extracts combined with dillapiol (1:5 and 1:16 ratio) were effective against both insecticide-susceptible and -resistant Colorado potato beetle Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say). In the laboratory, pyrethrum efficacy w… Show more

“…The inhibition of these key enzymes demonstrates the potential of essential oils to facilitate the performance of other insecticides in pest management. These results also agree with other studies that have demonstrated a reduction of enzymatic activity after exposing different pests to several essential oils (Liu et al, 2014;Waliwitiya et al, 2012).…”

“…Larew (1988) demonstrated the movement of a neem extract ingredient from a sprayed bean leaf to an unsprayed leaf on the opposite side of the plant. Liu et al (2014) recommended that azadirachtin and Pyrethrum should be combined with plant oils in order to be more effective. In this study as a result of the combination of Pyrethrum and NeemAzal with organic products Biofa and Polyversum, the bruchid numbers decreased definitely to a greater extent as compared to the relevant combinations applied once.…”
