Dilution of Precision (DOP) Factors for Evaluating Observations to Galileo Satellites with VLBI

Abstract: Installing a VLBI transmitter on Galileo satellites will allow observing satellites in parallel to quasars with Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) telescopes. This offers a variety of new applications such as the direct determination of the absolute orientation of the satellite constellation with respect to the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) and the improvement of the Terrestrial Reference Frame (TRF) exploiting the possibilities of direct high precision tying of the different space geode… Show more

“…Anderson et al [4] examined the tie accuracy between spacecraft and VLBI frames through Monte-Carlo simulations of onboard VT observations, comparing spacecraft coordinates in two frames. In separate studies, Wolf et al [12] and Sert et al [13] simulated onboard-Galileo VT observations in Intensive VLBI sessions to estimate the ascending node of the satellite orbit and to evaluate the formal precision of transferring UT1-UTC information to the Galileo station network. Wolf and Böhm [14] examined Galileo space ties in terms of the accuracy of frame ties by simulating VT observations for different Galileo satellites and checking the ground station repeatabilities.…”
