Dimensionality of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index in the young collegiate adults

Abstract: Purpose To explore and validate the factor structure of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) in young collegiate adults.MethodsSix hundred university students were initially contacted and invited to participate in a survey of their sleep experience and history. Of this preliminary sample 418 of the students (age = 20.92 ± 1.81 years, BMI = 23.30 ± 2.57 kg/m2) fulfilled the screening criteria and ultimately completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a self-report survey of respondents’ sleep habi… Show more

“…The results of the EFA were inconclusive, but the outcome of CFA favored unidimensionality of the PSQI in the Ethiopian community adults (Tables 6, 7 and 8). This is similar to some of the previous reports [5, 11, 17], though heterogeneity of the factor structure of the PSQI remains an area of extensive research [5, 7, 11, 16]. …”

“…The results of Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test of sampling adequacy, Bartlett’s test of sphericity, anti-image matrix and determinant show that the sample met the conditions for factor analysis (Table 6) [11, 16]. Kaiser’s criteria (Eigenvalue > 1), Scree plot and parallel analysis identified 3-factor models, while cumulative variance rule (>40%) found 2-factor model for the PSQI with seven components.…”

“…This study showed that when administered to occupational computer users in India; the three-dimensional model of the AIS demonstrated sufficient factorial validity, adequate internal consistency, strong internal homogeneity, and adequate item discrimination. In general, few studies have explored the factorial validity of sleep-evaluating questionnaires among Indians [25,29,30].…”

“…Two of the measures employed to determine the number of factors to retain in the EFA including the robust measure of the parallel analysis revealed 1-Factor model of the SDS-Khat in the polysubstance users (Table 5 ) [ 21 ]. The unidimensionality of the SDS-Khat scale was further endorsed by the findings of the CFA (Fig.…”

“…Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using maximum likelihood extraction with bootstrapping to smooth non-normality assessed the standard estimates of the item loadings on the factor(s). As per consensus approach, multiple fit indices from different categories were employed [ 9 , 21 , 22 ]. Incremental Fit index (IFI), Comparative Fit Index (CFI), root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), χ 2 and p of Close Fit (PClose) were used.…”
