Dimensions of diversity: Mapping the field of media and communication studies by combining cognitive and material dimensions

Abstract: Abstract:In this study we empirically map the field of media and communication studies (MCS) by focusing on relationships between cognitive dimensions (such as research topics and approaches) on the one hand and material dimensions (such as funding and institutionalization) on the other. Our analysis, which focuses on the field of MCS in Switzerland, identifies two clusters of research institutions representing distinct strands of research in the field. Results show how these two strands differ in terms of the… Show more

“…A similar expansion took place for research: for example the number of PhD students increased from less than 10 in the 1990s, to its current rate of about 150. Research also broadened in terms of subject topics, with the emergence of new topics driven by high societal demand, such as public opinion studies, health communication, and electronic communication (Buhmann et al 2015). The organization of the units is highly diverse (Table 1).…”

“…In a previous work, this approach was adopted to examine institutional units in Swiss communication sciences; profiles have been operationalized in terms of dimensionsdistinguishing between science production, training, education, public and private transfer-and measured through a set of indicators. We were therefore able to display a large diversity of profiles, distinguishing between research and education-oriented units (Probst et al 2011;Buhmann et al 2015). Beyond these results, the specific focus of this paper will be on the change of profiles over time and on their association with resourcing.…”

“…This analysis yielded two clusters of units (see Buhmann et al, 2015). Classical fields of media and communication research (CMCR) is a cluster situated in the more traditional MCS topics such as mass communication, journalism studies or media audiences, reception and effects, referring to the classical theories of MCS.…”
