Dimensions of the Beck depression inventory-II in clinically depressed outpatients

Abstract: To ascertain the dimensions of the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II; Beck, Steer, & Brown, 1996) in clinically depressed outpatients, exploratory factor analyses were performed with the BDI-II responses of 210 adult (> or =18 years) outpatients who were diagnosed with DSM-IV depressive disorders. Two factors representing Somatic-Affective and Cognitive dimensions were found whose compositions were comparable to those previously reported by Beck, Steer, and Brown (1996) for psychiatric outpatients in genera… Show more

“…Correlated models tend to produce highly correlated factors that provide only limited discriminant validity. Because of the high factor correlations, itemfactor allocations often vary substantially across samples, which limits their substantive interpretability [21,39]. In addition, the NA-PI-SD model for the BD!…”

“…The BDI‐II17, 18, 19 was used to assess level of depressive symptoms in the sample. This 21‐item instrument measures the degree of depressive symptoms, such as pessimism, agitation, and loss of energy, with most items scored on a 0 to 3 scale; 2 of the items are scored on a 0 to 6 scale and then rescaled to range from 0 to 3 before inclusion in the total.…”

“…It is of interest whether certain features of depression might play a particularly significant role, and this cannot be deduced from associations of total summed scores. It is common to divide the BDI into two subscales: a cognitive subscale and an affective-somatic subscale (Steer, Ball, Ranieri, & Beck, 1999;Beck et al, 1996). The selection of cognitive process measures included in the present study allowed even more specific associations to be examined.…”
