Dimensions of the Cricoid Cartilage and the Trachea

Abstract: In some women the inner diameter of the cricoid ring does not permit passage of a standard-size (7 mm, internal diameter [ID]) tracheal tube or a standard-size rigid endoscope through the larynx without mucosal damage. The small distance between the cricoarytenoid joints in many women and some men is the basis for of the clinical observation that women, especially, receive pressure necroses at the medial sides of the arytenoid cartilages attributable to tracheal intubation with standard tubes. The large differ… Show more

“…It then follows from (20) that μ o = 0.58 MPa, μ i = 0.043 MPa, and γ = 0.043 MPa. The radius values are based on an examination of Breatnach et al (1984), Randestad et al (2000); Hermawan (2004) and Sera et al (2003). The tissue stiffnesses are based on an examination of Suki et al (1993), Wang et al (2000b), and Hermawan (2004.…”

“…The morphometric dimensions of larynx were described in adults by several researchers [3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. In fetuses, the inadequate literatures regarding this subject were presented [8,[10][11][12].…”

“…In women, the mean anteroposterior diameter is 15 mm, but minimum values of 10 mm have been measured. In men, the mean anteroposterior diameter is quoted as 18 mm, with a minimum value of 13 mm [1,2]. Figure 8 compares the Timesco bougie with the Frova single-use intubating introducer (Cook UK Ltd, Letchworth, Herts, UK) and the Portex Venn reusable tracheal tube introducer (Smiths Medical International, Hythe, Kent, UK).…”
