The periglacial belt is located in the highest parts of temperate mountains. The balance between mean air and ground temperatures and the presence of water determine the effectiveness of periglacial processes related to permafrost, the active layer or seasonally frozen ground (SFG). This study combines thermal and geomorphological data obtained in four Pyrenean massifs (Infierno‐Argualas, Posets, Maladeta and Monte Perdido) to improve knowledge on the occurrence and distribution of frozen ground. The methodology used is based on the study of landforms as frozen ground indicators, mapping processes, ground temperature analysis, basal temperature of snow, thermal mapping and geomatic surveys on rock glaciers and protalus lobes. In the Pyrenean high mountain areas the lower limit of frozen ground is at ~2,650m a.s.l., possible permafrost appears above 2,650m a.s.l. on north‐ and south‐facing slopes, and probable permafrost is dominant above 2,900m a.s.l. Unfrozen ground with cold‐associated geomorphological processes reach 2,900m a.s.l. and unfrozen and frozen ground distribution points to a patchy pattern throughout the periglacial belt. The most widespread frozen grounds are SFG. The thermal data, mean annual ground temperature, cold season temperatures, bottom temperature snow measurements, freeze/thaw cycles and distribution of landforms permit the establishment of a periglacial land system divided into three main belts: infraperiglacial, middle periglacial and supraperiglacial. The large number of processes and landforms that are involved and their altitudinal and spatial organization make up a complex environment that determines the geoecological dynamics of high mountain areas.

At present there is a wide variety of geomatic techniques available to determine the dynamics of glaciers, rock glaciers and ice patches. Between 1991 and 2012, different geomatic techniques – total station, global positioning system, close‐range photogrammetry and terrestrial laser scanner – were applied to monitor the movement of cryosphere landforms in the high mountains of the Iberian Peninsula. The applied techniques must be adapted to the dynamic conditions of cryospheric environments, and so there is no ideal general technique, and depending on the characteristics of the geomorphological structure to be studied, different geomatic techniques can be used. However, there are situations in which certain instruments cannot be used: global positioning system–real time kinematics shows difficulties when the presence of vertical walls cause a ‘multipath’ effect. The technique that provides the best results in each case must be chosen, although they can all give good results in measuring and monitoring geomorphological processes. This paper analyses the techniques used and results on vertical and horizontal changes of glaciers, rock glaciers and ice patches in the Sierra Nevada, Pyrenees and Picos de Europa, and differences among them by location and topoclimatic setting. All glaciers and rock glaciers show a thinning tendency and annual variations in the flow velocity. In addition to the specific dynamic analysis, the geomatic techniques can be used to detail scale and volume changes and perimeter of the analysed landforms.

RESUMEN:Los montículos de hielo son formas periglaciares localizadas en los macizos de la Maladeta y Posets (Pirineos Centrales) entre 2670 y 2900 metros de altitud. Se ha realizado el inventariado y análisis geomorfológico de detalle complementado con registros térmicos continuos del suelo y medidas de la temperatura basal del manto nival (BTS) durante el período 2009-2011. Todo ello permite establecer la dinámica actual de estas formas periglaciares. El seguimiento térmico muestra el comportamiento térmico anual y permite interpretar su morfogénesis. Los factores topoclimáticos, el permafrost y el hielo estacional determinan su génesis, localización y durabilidad, y se han localizado montículos de hielo en diferentes altitudes, emplazamientos geomorfológicos y condiciones térmicas. En este trabajo se establecen distintos tipos en ambientes morfogenéticos diferenciados: «montículos de hielo en áreas con permafrost», donde la emisión de frío es directa desde el subsuelo, en este caso el ambiente con permafrost puede proceder de la presencia de un helero enterrado, capaz de emitir una onda de frío y «montículos de hielo en áreas con hielo estacional», donde la emisión de frío es indirecta, con frío procedente de los factores ambientales y topoclimáticos. La localización en un ambiente marginal de alta montaña templada como son los Pirineos, les convierte en un eficaz geoindicador morfoclimático en relación directa con las variaciones térmicas interanuales.
